Good Things Are Still Happening: CHWs Leading the Way Through Challenging Times
By: Tanikka C. Price, EdD, JD, HIO Chief Education Officer
Recent federal budget challenges have disrupted programs that many families depend on, including SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). While these disruptions create uncertainty, they also shine a light on the resilience and leadership of Community Health Workers (CHWs).
At Health Impact Ohio, we know that CHWs are essential partners in helping individuals and families navigate difficult circumstances. We are collaborating with local organizations to ensure access to vital resources. Thanks to support from the City of Columbus and The Columbus Foundation, area food pantries have received additional funding to meet community needs during this uncertain time.
Supporting Our Communities and Ourselves
CHWs often live and work in the same communities they serve. It’s important to remember that utilizing public assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC, or Medicaid is not a sign of weakness—it’s a bridge toward stability and wellness.
As you serve others, remember to care for yourself as well. Maintain healthy boundaries, take breaks when possible, and reach out for support when needed. You are a guide, advocate, and connector—but not solely responsible for the outcomes your clients face.
Reframing the Holidays
This season, many families are finding creative ways to celebrate without adding to their financial stress. Some ideas include:
Taking free or low-cost family outings, such as driving to see holiday lights.
Using community programs that offer free or discounted admission to local attractions like the Zoo or COSI.
Focusing on shared experiences and gratitude instead of material gifts.
These moments of connection can be just as meaningful—and often more memorable—than traditional celebrations.
Moving Forward Together
Community Health Workers have always been leaders in resilience and compassion. Health Impact Ohio is committed to supporting CHWs so they can continue strengthening the communities they serve.
Together, we will move forward with hope, resourcefulness, and unity.
Stronger Together.
