Celebrating Development & Education at Health Impact Ohio through Evaluation of Our CHW Certification Training Program

At Health Impact Ohio, we believe healthier communities begin with people who are trusted, equipped, and empowered to make a difference. Community Health Workers (CHWs) embody all these characteristics—meeting people where they are, building lasting relationships, and connecting families to the resources they need to thrive. And behind every successful CHW is a team committed to preparing them for this important work.

A recent independent evaluation by Strategic Research Group of the HIO Community Health Worker Certification Training Program confirms what we've seen firsthand since the program launched in 2021: investing in education creates lasting impact. The findings highlight not only the success of our graduates but also the dedication of the HIO Education Team, which has worked tirelessly to build a training program grounded in excellence, equity, and lived experience.

Over the past five years, our team has graduated 323 CHWs through eleven certification cohorts, creating pathways into meaningful careers and strengthening Ohio's community health workforce. Their commitment extends far beyond virtual sessions. They have built a learning environment where participants feel supported, challenged, and inspired to use their lived experiences as powerful tools for improving health outcomes.

Today, nearly half of program graduates are working as CHWs or Supervisors, helping patients to navigate healthcare systems, access essential resources, and overcome barriers that impact their health. Nearly one in four graduates earned a promotion after completing the program, while many reported increased wages and continued professional growth through additional certifications and education. These outcomes reflect more than career advancement — they represent stronger communities served by well-prepared professionals.

The program also continues to produce exceptional certification outcomes. 82 percent of graduates have earned certification through the Ohio Board of Nursing, with nearly half becoming certified within one month of graduation and 92 percent earning certification within one year. These milestones speak to both the quality of the curriculum and the individualized support participants receive throughout their journey.

Perhaps even more meaningful is what graduates had to say about the people who guided them along the way. 97 percent said they would recommend the program to others, describing it as supportive, engaging, and worthwhile. 94 percent agreed it was a good use of their time. Survey respondents also felt the program prepared them at least "very well" to serve their communities.

Dr. Tanikka Price adds, “Each cohort has a unique flair. We are so grateful for all those who have chosen our program to get to their certification program. It is our proudest achievement that we never have to advertise. It is word of mouth that keeps our classes full!”

These outcomes are no accident. The HIO Education Team continually listens, learns, and evolves the program to meet the changing needs of CHWs across the state. From strengthening curriculum and expanding practicum opportunities to removing barriers through a no-cost training model, the team has remained committed to preparing compassionate, skilled professionals who reflect and understand the communities they serve.

This evaluation affirms that HIO's CHW Certification Training Program is making a measurable difference.
