Community Health Worker Profile Project

Health Impact Ohio was honored to host Vivian Jackson Anderson at our Central Ohio Pathways HUB Monthly Meeting, where she educated CHWs, Supervisors, and HUB staff on Black History: CHWs and Black History.

As part of the presentation, Vivian recited the poem, "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black (Reflections of an African-American Mother)" by Margaret Burroughs. During a virtual interview for our Profile Project series, Vivian was kind enough to allow us to record her recitation of the poem again to share with our CHWs and other community partners.

When thinking about what to write about for Black History Month 2023, I immediately thought of whether or not Black History Month is still relevant. Since its inception, Black History Month has been a time set aside to celebrate and observe the contributions of African Americans. Black History Week was started by Carter G. Woodson, considered the “father of black history” in 1926. February was chosen because both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass celebrate their birthdays during that month. This brings me to whether or not Black History Month is still relevant. I think it is:

“Founded in 1908, the American Society for Clinical Investigation is one of the oldest and most esteemed nonprofit honor societies of physician-scientists. Membership is by election only, and each year, the ASCI Council considers membership nominations of several hundred physician-scientists — aged 50 years or younger — and recommends up to 100 candidates for election based on outstanding scholarly achievement. Election is a milestone in the physician-scientist career path, and the ASCI holds its members to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, mutual respect, and collegiality."
