As we come to the final piece of our three-part Beyond the Headlines: Stories from Youth Mental Health Leaders series, this week we’re highlighting the work of two social entrepreneurs advancing youth mental health within our portfolio. These two leaders are building coordinated networks between schools, health systems, juvenile justice, and community providers so young people don’t fall through the cracks, ensuring young people stay connected to the care they need, not pushed into punitive pathways.

In May, we published “Beyond the Headlines: A Deep Dive into Trends and Opportunities in Youth Mental Health,” a landscape analysis in partnership with human-centered design firm, People Rocket. This report provides a clearer picture of where funding is flowing, where the most pressing gaps remain, and how philanthropy can drive meaningful change in access and opportunity.

One of the key themes from the landscape analysis? No single program, clinic, or school can support young people alone. The most effective systems are the ones that work together. 

American Academy of Pediatrics: Believe It or Not, It’s Almost Flu Season: What Do You Need to Know?

In the sweltering days of late summer, it’s hard to imagine that it’s almost fall—which means that we can start offering the influenza (flu) vaccine to our patients.

Not only is the flu vaccine important to decrease disease severity in children, it’s an important public health intervention, as children who have the flu are a major source of infection for their families, friends, and other contacts.

So what are the recommendations for this year? Is there anything new?

This week, Pediatrics is early releasing the policy statement and accompanying technical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) entitled “Recommendations for Prevention and Control of Influenza in Children, 2025-2026” (10.1542/peds.2025-073620 and 10.1542/peds.2025-073622). These statements are authored by the AAP’s Committee on Infectious Diseases, and the lead authors are Drs. Kristina Bryant (University of Louisville) and Annika Hofstetter (University of Washington).
