New Study on Care Disparities Released in JAMA Network Open: Racial and Ethnic Differences in Mental Health Service Use Among Adolescents

A new study in JAMA Network Open found significant racial and ethnic disparities in post-pandemic mental health care for U.S. adolescents, with 31.7% of non-Hispanic white adolescents receiving care compared to 25.6% of Hispanic youth and 21.9% of non-Hispanic Black youth.

“Findings  In this cross-sectional study of 23 541 adolescents, members of racial and ethnic minority groups were significantly less likely to access mental health visits or receive psychotropic medications or services in outpatient, telemental health, or school settings compared with White adolescents. Few to no racial or ethnic differences were observed in use of support groups, peer support, or services in emergency department or inpatient settings.

But they can also bring challenges—sometimes showing up as procrastination, emotional triggers, or moments of feeling stuck on the job.

At Health Impact Ohio, preparing the next generation of CHWs means more than simply delivering coursework—it means caring for the whole person. Since its launch in 2020, the Health Impact Ohio CHW Certification Training Program has empowered trusted community members to gain the skills and credentials they need to make a lasting impact in their neighborhoods. Offered virtually over 12 weeks, with a required practicum, the program equips participants with the tools to address health disparities, connect individuals to care, and promote improved health outcomes across Ohio.
